Question
Q. I bought a template that auto updates in Adobe Illustrator but when I create a new project folder the links are not right. How can I fix it?
I created new folder with one of the SRGFX templates that auto updates in Adobe Illustrator. The wrap from the design file is not linking correctly or is showing the graphics from a previous project. What do I do?
Answer
This is a common problem and the work around is simple. Might take a minute the first time, its a about a 30 second process once you get used to doing it. Follow carefully the instructions below.
1. Have your base template folder setup how you like it. Keep the name generic. You will be making all your copies from this folder.
2. Duplicate the folder when you start a new project.
3. Rename the duplicate folder and files however you want.
There is a good chance the files will want to link to the original folder in step one. If that happens go to step 4.
4. Rename the original folder anything different. I typically just add a special character in front of the name.
This will break the linked files to the new duplicate folder from step 2.
5. In the new duplicate project folder, open the detail template. Its possible because you broke the links by changing the name of the original folder the file will now target the links in the duplicate folder. If that’s the case everything will work as expected. If not, go to step 6.
6. Make sure the detail template is closed from the duplicated folder. Go ahead and now open it. Because the link to the graphics file is now broken a dialog will open immediately asking you to link to the file. Click yes and then navigate to your newly named body panels file for the duplicate folder. You should only have to do this once and all of the links will update.
Its about a 30 second process. once you do it a couple times you will see its easy.
